About

Zibusiso M. Masuku (Zee) serves as the Senior Biosafety and Biosecurity Technical Officer Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention’s (Africa CDC). He leads the implementation of the continental health agency’s Biosafety and Biosecurity Initiative a program developed to strengthen the biosafety and biosecurity capabilities of African Union Member States. He is a global health security professional specialising in the implementation of regional policies and is a proponent of sustainable best practices in high and maximum containment facilities. He has over eighteen (18) years of experience in the health security space, with a keen interest in the enterprising application of context-tailored mitigation measures for the sustainable operation of biocontainment facilities in resource-constrained environments. One example of this is his contribution to BioPREVAIL, which is a One Health Security Innovation Initiative for Sustainable Laboratories. He has served in various expert roles including: current Co-Chair of the Biosecurity and Biosurveillence Technical Working Group of the Signature Initiative to Mitigate Biological Threats in Africa (SIMBA);  led the establishment of the Regional Centre of Excellence for Biosafety and Biosecurity for Southern Africa; as a Member of the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) Technical Advisory Group on Biosafety (TAG-B), and currently is an Expert Consultant and Qualified Expert of the United Nations Secretary-General’s Mechanism for the Investigation of Alleged Use of Chemical, Biological or Toxin Weapons (UNSGM).
